Bears climb over the Highlanders

23/07/2008 4:00:00 AM
The Bears scored 5 tries to the Highlanders 3 and led 18 -6 at half time. Braidwood's win was more satisfying for they played the majority of the second half with 12 men after halfback. A J McGowan was sent from the field on a dangerous throw charge. The Bears dominated the first half but only cruised in the second doing just enough to grab two vital competition points.

Best for the Bears were Mark Piper who scored a great try from 30 metres out, and was disallowed another. Mark`s strong running proved a handful for the defence all game while he tackled as well and picked up the Players Player Award. Danny White, AKA Big T, got the 2nd Players Player award with a powerful display in defence in the first half which laid the platform for the Bears win. T scored 2 tries, and the second sealed the match for the Bears 10 minutes from time. Phil Jonas picked up the Coaches Award for his tradesmen like display in the second row. Along with Mark Piper he was on the paddock for 65 of the 70 minutes and was high on the list in both the tackle count and hit ups making good metres every time he got the ball.

Next Saturday the Bears take on the Boonanulla Raiders at the Rec at 2.30 with Game Day Sponsors Len Mutton & Co. Thank You to Fiona, Ling and the Staff at Muttons for their generous support. Proth`s "Pick-a Bear" now stands at $400 with 4 Bears picked for next game. Niel McMillan drew last Fridays Bear. Pat Coffey won the wood raffle generously donated by Rooster Grant and Grizzley Barrett. Thank you to all who supported.

The Bruce Stuarts Scoreboard for round 13 Bears 30 (D White 2 Tries, AJ McGowan 1, D Augustin 1, M Piper 1 , A J McGowan 4 conversions , D Augustin 1). Highlanders 12.
