Braidwood Quilters Workshops

22/07/2008 10:57:00 AM
Due to the generosity of the Servicemen's Club, many members of the community, textile companies, and local organisations which have donated funds to cover the cost of machine quilting, Braidwood Quilters and friends are well on the way to achieving the goal. The machine quilting sponsors will be named on the quilt labels and photographed with their quilts when completed.

As people who enjoy the art of making quilts know, there are many steps to making a quilt. The choice of design, the cutting of pieces, the sewing and assembly of blocks for the top, the choice of batting for the centre and the sewing of the backing all have to be completed before quilting. The quilting is done either by hand, domestic machine or by an amateur or professional long arm machine quilter. Then final act of binding the "quilt sandwich" gives strength and a neat finished appearance. A label is attached to provide provenance for valuation and record the history of the quilt.

Over the past six workshops more than twenty people have contributed to the process, and not everyone has been an experienced quilter but a willing sewer. Some have been to every workshop, others help when they can and it's not too late to join us if you would like to participate. It has been a wonderful experience for everybody and Braidwood Quilters wish to thank June Weatherstone for her guidance and one and all for their help and friendship. The workshops will continue on a monthly basis and when twenty-five quilts have been completed we think we'll have a party!
